ABOUT BRIDGET MANNING

How I Got Here

In December of 2019 I will receive my Bachelor of Science in Communication. While in college I became the apiary manager at my school. Working with the bees has showed me the ecological connectivity that organisms and the land have. Holding this position has allowed me to discover my passion for sustainability and environmental conservation. One of my main goals in life is to help people reconnect with nature. Our quality of life is so intertwined with how we interact with nature, and I strive to help people see this connection.

 The start of my college career was not an easy start- I bounced around schools quite a bit. I lived in New Jersey, North Carolina, Philadelphia, and ended up staying at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. Halfway through my studies as a communication major I had hit a breaking point. I thought I was way too deep into a field I did not want to be in. I wanted to learn how to grow my own food and how to be a beekeeper. I wanted to study ecology and sociology, and all of these environmental related things were not what I was being taught as a communication major. However, during my college years I found myself farming on a sustainable Hawaiian farm, applying for pollinator garden grants for my school, working on a hemp farm from seeding to harvest, and spending time in remote Amazonian communities in Peru for sustainable beekeeping work. I have learned to use my communication skills to inspire other people to respect and appreciate other cultures, question their consumption habits, and recognize our shared humanity.
